Ionian Highlights

Follow in the footsteps of the Venetians

Follow in the footsteps of the Venetians

When in the Ionian Islands, one often has a slight sensation of being in Venice. Impregnable fortresses built by La Serenissima stand strong on Corfu, Lefkada and Zakynthos; bas-reliefs of the winged lion of St Mark stare out from venerable stones; architectural motifs more associated with the palazzi of the Grand Canal add an exotic flair; some recipes have a distinctly northern Italian feel; and many of the local grape varieties hail from the Veneto.

One of the best things about the Ionian Islands is the ease of hiring a boat. Just head down to your nearest harbour village and in minutes you’ll be chugging away on an adventure. You’ll be able to drop anchor and swim in limpid-watered bays, and explore the coastline at your own pace. And when it’s time for lunch, simply dock at a seafront taverna and have a well-deserved break.

Raise a glass to Ionian wine

Winemaking in the Ionian Islands is enjoying a renaissance, and oenologists are coaxing some excellent vintages from the archipelago’s indigenous grape varieties. Little of the wine produced on the islands is exported, so you’ll probably only be able to taste a Corfiot Skopelitiko, a Kefalonian Robolla or a Lefkadian Vardea while you’re there. Take the opportunity – you won’t be disappointed.
