The history of the east Mediterranean in a microcosm

The history of the east Mediterranean in a microcosm

Little happened in the eastern Mediterranean that did not impact the Dodecanese. Two outstanding examples of the islands’ fascinating history are the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on Patmos, and the Palace of the Grand Master of the Order of St John of Jerusalem on Rhodes, both of which are part of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

A unique take on Greek cuisine

A unique take on Greek cuisine

The Dodecanese Islands have a distinct culinary heritage, with plenty of traditional dishes to try. A few of our favourites are: avranies, wild asparagus cooked with onion and lemon juice; pitaroudia, a deep-fried chickpea dumpling; octopus stifado; cheese pies with cinnamon and sugar; and fountes, courgette flowers filled with fragrant rice and herbs.

A summer of events for all

A summer of events for all

The Dodecanese Islands come alive in the summer with numerous cultural events: on Patmos, there’s an International Film Festival, a Chamber Music Festival and a Sacred Music Festival; Rhodes celebrates its history with the Mediaeval Rose Festival; and on Kos, the locals delight in their Hippokrateia, a three-month festival devoted to the arts.
