Saronic Highlights

Different twins

Different twins

Once home to shipping magnates, and key players in the Greek War of Independence, the ports of Hydra and Spetses share a history but also have individual charms. The grand mansions of the former wrap round the steep hills above the harbour; the latter boasts wide-open sea views, beaches, and, in the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, a hint of Côte d'Azur chic.

The charismatic beauty of the Saronic Islands has long attracted Hollywood filmmakers. In 1957, Sophia Loren arrived on Hydra to shoot Boy on a Dolphin, while Michael Caine (The Magus), Daniel Craig and Edward Norton (Knives Out), and Olivia Coleman and Dakota Fanning (The Lost Daughter), have all worked their magic on Spetses.

Easy exploration

You’ll never tire of your Saronic island of choice, but if you wish to explore further afield, it’s easy to do so. The crossing between Spetses and Hydra takes just half an hour. In 40 minutes, you can travel from Aegina to Piraeus (and then on to Athens), and should you wish to head to Aegina from Hydra (or vice versa), you’ll be there in less than an hour.
