Modica Travel Guide
Towns and cities in Sicily
Situated within a gorge in the south of Sicily, Modica captivates visitors with its dramatic setting, stunning architecture, and 400-year tradition of Sicilian chocolate-making. This picturesque town, divided into "higher" and "lower" sections connected by numerous flights of steps, is built in the Sicilian Baroque style and is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Sicily.
About the area
Nestled in the Val di Noto region of Sicily, Modica's rich history is evident in its beautiful architecture and cultural heritage. The town's centrepiece is the stunning Church of San Giorgio, and its buildings have even been featured in the popular TV series Inspector Montalbano. Once a prominent centre during the County of Modica's reign, the town's historical significance is still felt today. Visitors can explore the charming streets, marvel at the baroque palaces, sample some signature chocolate, and soak in the unique atmosphere that makes Modica so special.
Things to do in Modica
- Visit the Castello dei Conti: Survey the town and the surrounding area from atop this historic castle and rocky outcrop and enjoy impressive views.
- Stroll through the historic centre: Wander the charming streets, visit aristocratic palaces, and enjoy the town's unique atmosphere. Visit this stunning baroque Church of San Giorgio and admire its impressive dome and intricate details.
- Indulge in Modica's chocolate: Being part of the Spanish kingdom for so many years meant that Sicily was often one of the first recipients of the new foodstuffs being brought back from South America. Cacao was one of these and today Modica still specialises in making granulous chocolate, often flavoured with chilli pepper, cinnamon or vanilla, that is based on Aztec methods and recipes. Chocolate shops abound and, for the real chocoholic, it is sometimes possible to watch the “chocolatiers” at work. Maybe the best chocolate shop, and certainly the oldest in Sicily, is the Antica Pasticceria Bonaiuto in Corso Umberto I, 159.
- Relax on the beaches: Just out of town, the beaches at Marina di Modica and Sampieri are absolutely splendid and relatively quiet outside August.
- Attend the Chocomodica festival: Plan your visit to take part in this Willy Wonka-esque chocolate festival, celebrating all things chocolate.
