The Area
Domus Olivae sits amidst an extensive olive estate below the historic, charming hill-top town of Chiaramonte Gulfi in the southeast of Sicily, and about 20km (as the crow flies) from the fabulous sandy beaches that line the coast from Scoglitti down to Punta Secca and Marina di Ragusa. This is Montalbano country and if you're a fan of the Inspector's work, you'll find the stunning sea and landscapes very familiar. An easy drive away is gorgeous Ragusa, a gastronomic hub with several Michelin-starred restaurants and one of a series of stunning baroque towns, including Modica, Scicli and Noto, that forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Val di Noto. Another architectural curiosity in the area is the fantastical Castello di Donnafugata.
Slightly further afield, though still within easy day-trip distance, are the historic towns of Caltagirone, known for its ceramics and its baroque centre, and Syracuse, an ancient Greek town, once the mightiest city in Magna Graecia. Piazza Armerina and its world famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Villa Romana del Casale is also just over an hour's drive away.

DiscoverPrivate boat charters in Southeast Sicily
From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.

Domus Olivae was absolutely amazing. Everyone agreed that it was the most beautiful villa that we've rented to date and the service surpassed our expectations. The villa itself was gorgeous and even more luxurious than the website pictures can capture. The grounds were beautiful and the pool spectacular. The teenagers wandered the olive grove after dark and played cards outside until very late; great memories for all of them. The service at Domus Olivae was exceptional. Everyone was friendly and professional. We felt that they truly wanted us to have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
