The Area
Il Baglio della Sorgente sits in the southeast of Sicily, just a few kilometres inland from the long stretches of sandy beach that line the coast from Scoglitti down to Punta Secca and Marina di Ragusa (Montalbano country). Inland, just an easy drive away is Ragusa, one of several stunning baroque towns, including Modica, Scicli and Noto, that form the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Val di Noto. A more off-the-beaten-track town worth visiting is Chiaramonte Gulfi, which sits in a superbly panoramic position in the hills to the northeast. One architectural curiosity in the area is the fantastical Castello di Donnafugata.
Slightly further afield, though still within easy day-trip distance, are the historic towns of Caltagirone, known for its ceramics and its baroque centre, and Syracuse, an ancient Greek town, once the mightiest city in Magna Graecia. The world famous UNESCO World Heritage of Villa Romana del Casale, in Piazza Armerina, is also an easy drive away.

DiscoverPrivate boat charters in Southeast Sicily
From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.

I don't want to advertise quite how good Baglio della Sorgente and its housekeeper are, just in case they get booked up! It's a great place with lovely people. Nothing was too much trouble. A big shout out to The Thinking Traveller team, too.
