Kefalonia is an idyllic destination for beach lovers. Wherever you go you will never be far from a paradisiacal stretch of white sand or a picture-postcard bay. There are beaches for those who love a little action, beaches for those in search of peace and quiet, beaches for families and beaches for watersports enthusiasts. Here below is our guide to some of Kefalonia’s best seafront hangouts, starting in the north and heading clockwise around the island:

Foki

Where: On the northeastern coast of Kefalonia, a couple of kilometres south of Fiskardo.
Description: A small pebbly beach bordered by trees, whose greenery both provides shade and endows the water with an emerald tinge. It’s generally a peaceful spot with no amenities.
Access: Easy, by car

Agios Sofia

Where: roughly half way up the northern peninsular of Erisos.
Description: A quite off-the-beaten-track pebbly beach in a semi-circular bay. Its transparent waters are a pleasure to swim and snorkel in, while the views of Ithaca are lovely. It’s generally quiet thanks also to the lack of facilities.
Access: Easy, by car, though it is ardoun 8km from the main road.

Antisamos

Where: A couple of km due east of Sami.
Description: Arguably one of Kefalonia’s loveliest beaches: small pebbles, cobalt waters, views of Ithaca, bars, lidos and other amenities.
Access: Easy, by car

Koutsoupia

Where: A few kilometres south of Antisamos.
Description: A small, isolated pebbly beach surrounded by deep green vegetation. There are no amenities and is only accessible by boat, so it’s perfect if you’re looking for somewhere relaxing.
Access: By boat only

Poros

Where: Poros village, on the southeast coast.
Description: A long stretch of pebbly beach with shallow waters and most amenities you could wish for (lidos offering sunbeds and umbrellas, bars, tavernas, etc).
Access: Easy by car

Skala

Where: On the southeastern tip of Kefalonia.
Description: Around 7km of wonderful sand, lapped by clear deep water. It’s possibly the best place for watersports enthusiasts but also those in search of good lidos and other facilities.
Access: Easy, by car

Lourdas

Where: midway along the south coast, about 16km from Argostoli.
Description: A lovely, popular sandy beach with inviting waters and plenty of amenities. It gets very busy in the high season, as it’s in quite a touristy area.
Access: Easy, by car

Spartias

Where: Just west of Lourdas, about 12km southeast of Argostoli.
Description: clear, azure waters and soft sand bordered by towering white cliffs. There aren’t any facilities on the beach itself but there are a few bars and tavernas within an easy stroll.
Access: Easy, by car

Amnes

Where: About 10km south of Argostoli on the south coast.
Description: golden sands, shallow, limpid waters and spectacular sunsets. Its position near Argostoli means that it can get fairly busy in the summer months but the lack of amenities means it is rarely overcrowded.
Access: Easy, by car

Makris Gialos

Where: Just south of Argostili.
Description: A beach with everything: soft sand, enticing, shallow waters, lidos, bars and tavernas. It is popular with locals and tourists alike and tends to get busy in the summer.

Lepeda

Where: Just south of Lixouri on the southeastern coast of the Paliki peninsular.
Description: golden-orange sand, shallow waters and wonderful views across the Gulf of Argostoli to Mount Ainos. There are good amenities and it is a popular beach with families.
Access: Easy, by car

Xi

Where: on the southern tip of the Paliki peninsular.
Description: a lovely beach whose sand, they say, has curative properties (so don’t be alarmed if you see people covered in the stuff). The waters are shallow and there are amenities (lidos, bars, etc), so it is a popular spot for families with children.
Access: Easy, by car

Platia Amnos

Where: midway up the west coast of the Paliki peninsular.
Description: a long stretch of golden sand, lapped by azure waters and delimited by rough hilly terrain. There are no facilities here and so it is popular with those looking for more tranquil surroundings. Once accessible only by boat, there are now 400 steps linking the beach and the parking area above. Take provisions with you!Access: Easy, by car, but then there are 400 steps to access the beach.

Atheras

Where: on the northern tip of the Paliki peninsular.
Description: a tranquil spot with fine sand and shallow turquoise waters. Thanks to these features, it is popular with families with children. Some come to the beach just to go to one of the idyllically positioned excellent seafront tavernas in the area.
Access: Easy, by car.

Myrtos

Where: on the west coast at the bottom of the Erisos peninsula.
Description: Kefalonia’s most famous beach and, according to many, one of the most beautiful anywhere in Greece. Its elegant crescent of white pebbles is delimited on one side by transparent azure waters and, on the other, by steep white cliffs. Some areas of the beach have good amenities, including lidos and snack bars.
Access: Easy, by car.

Assos

Where: In and around the village of Assos on the west coast of the Erisos peninsular.
Description: a series of tranquil pebbly coves bordered by shady pine trees. The beach in town is within an easy stroll of tavernas and bars and there can be few better sensations after a hot hike up to the castle than plunging yourself into the enticing cool waters below.
