Martina Franca Travel Guide

Towns and cities in Puglia

An exploration of the lovely Valle d’Itria region of Puglia would not be complete without a visit to Martina Franca, the largest town in the area. More bustling than its neighbours Alberobello, Locorotondo, and Cisternino, Martina Franca has been a commercial hub since the early 14th century when it was granted special privileges. Today, the town is renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture, a testament to its affluent past and a must-visit for anyone exploring the region.

About the area

Martina Franca, Puglia

Martina Franca lies in the Taranto province of Puglia and is characterised by its elegant old centre, where grand palazzos and churches line the narrow streets. The centre is enclosed by the remains of its ancient walls and distinguished by four remaining Baroque gates. The more modern section of the town, developed in the 19th century, is delineated from the old town via the gates, and features some fine buildings and a tranquil shady park.

Things to do in Martina Franca

Things to do in Martina Franca
  • Explore the historic centre: Wander through the charming streets of Martina Franca's old town, admiring the noble palaces and ornate churches that echo the town's rich history. You’ll find at least 20 palaces and 15 churches to explore throughout the town.
  • Visit the Basilica di San Martino: Don't miss the stunning Basilica di San Martino, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Its intricate, sandy-coloured façade is extremely fine, especially when illuminated by the evening sun.
  • Relax in Martina Franca’s piazzas: Stroll through the tree-lined expanse of Piazza XX Settembre, which leads through the Porta di Santo Stefano (one of the four gates) into Piazza Roma. From here it is a short walk through the narrow streets to Piazza Plebiscito and from this splendid piazza, we recommend you just follow your nose and soak up the atmosphere, stopping off, perhaps, for refreshments in one of the many outdoor cafés.
  • Admire the Palazzo Ducale: Explore the impressive 17th-century Palazzo Ducale, located in Piazza Roma, which was built as a regal residence and showcases the grandeur of Martina Franca's aristocratic past. Here you’ll find a museum where you can admire regional artwork and period pieces.
  • Enjoy local cuisine: One thing you must try or buy before leaving Martina Franca is some capocollo, a kind of cured ham that is the pride of the town. Mention it to any local and their faces will light up!
