Areas of Skiathos

Skiathos is an island of abundance. It boasts 60 beaches along its astounding coastline, dense forests covering 70% of its landmass, endless sloping valleys, not to mention the profusion of high-quality local ingredients and an intoxicating atmosphere that will bewitch any lucky traveller who visits it.

Skiathos is also an island of contrast. Beyond its verdant landscapes shrouded in shady trees, its northern coast is dramatically lined with impressive rocky crags; away from the splendid undulating valleys that seem entirely untouched, there are towns that pulse with life from morning to night; long stretches of sandy beach are accompanied by small, pebbly coves; and a profound history going back many thousands of years is complemented by exciting new restaurant and bar concepts which continue to pop up over the island.

The sweetest treasures can be found and enjoyed on Skiathos. Juicy figs grow all through the island and should be enjoyed with a hefty dollop of thick Greek yoghurt and honey which comes from the nectar of the many pine trees scattered around. For savoury delights, flaky pies are cooked with wild vegetables and fresh cheeses. Liquid gold (extra virgin olive oil) is also produced on Skiathos along with a floral Moschato and ancient variety of Muscat wine from vineyards that are cultivated by the monks of Evangelistrias monastery.

As a gem of the Sporades, Skiathos will leave an indelible impression on all your senses, and whether you are seeking a holiday brimming with activity or simmering with serenity, Skiathos in all its abundance and contrast, is the perfect place to find it.

Best places to go in Skiathos

Skiathos town – Lively and animated, and in many ways a town that never sleeps, Skiathos is witness to the early morning fishing boats leaving the port to scope out the catch of day, as well as the late-night revellers who have spent the evening drinking and dancing at one of the vivacious clubs or bars. There is plenty to behold in Skiathos town from the endless restaurants, fascinating museums, and independent shops.

Sea Caves at Lalaria – Two mesmerising sea caves, Skotini and Galazia are an absolute must when visiting Skiathos. Located on the north coast and only accessible by boat, the caves are characterised by their difference in colour. Skotini is the dark cave with a low and narrow entrance blocking most light from entering. Galazia is the blue cave and is larger than Skotini. The waters glow an otherworldly colour and its reflections dance on the cave’s textured rocks.

The Medieval Castle of Skiathos – Perched on a rocky cliff on the edge the island, the ruins of this fortress are well worth the hike. It is worth noting that the path upwards is steep, but the views of the Sporades are second to none. The castle was built on this site as a means of protecting locals from any potential attacks, and many also lived in that designated area. Although most of the medieval settlement has fallen to ruins, traces of houses and churches can still be found around the cliff.
