The Area

Casa delle Sirene is situated just a few miles from Capo Passero, whose lighthouse signals Italy’s most meridional point – considerably further south than Tunis! The coast is almost entirely given over to long sandy beaches, the very same ones landed on by British and Canadian forces during Operation Huskey in the 2nd World War. Just to the west is the port of Pozzallo from where, in just 90 minutes by hydrofoil, it is possible to get to Malta. To the north is the splendid Baroque town of Noto, Syracuse, once the mightiest city in Magna Graecia and Vendicari Nature Reserve, home to beautiful unspoilt beaches, migrating flamingoes and nesting turtles. Less than an hour's drive to the west are the other splendid towns of the Val di Noto UNESCO Heritage Site, Modica and Scicli, and, a little further afield, Ragusa.

The beaches in the area of Pozzallo and Ispica (including the beach outside the house) have received several consecutive "Bandiere Blu", attesting to the cleanliness of the water and their general ecological excellence.

From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.

Casa delle Sirene is a lovely villa in a fabulous setting and very convenient for the beach.

Cecilia Bishop September 2024

The owner at Casa delle Sirene provided some really helpful tips for local things to see / do / eat. She was great - and it was a pleasure to meet her and stay at her home.

The folks that welcomed us at Casa delle Sirene were lovely and accommodating. They brought us a wonderful light dinner that we devoured and had stocked a few other necessities for our first night and morning in Sicilia. The cleaning crew were also lovely and accommodating.

Miss Christine Jacobs, United States of America December 2021

The owner was superb. She was always available for any question. A real gem.

FA, United States of America September 2021

I would certainly rate the highest the attention and support from the owner, who was extremely helpful and supportive, and the quality of Casa delle Sirene and the location.
