Things to do in Trani
- Visit the Trani Cathedral: Explore the iconic seafront cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, known for its stunning Romanesque architecture, intricate carvings, and impressive bronze doors crafted by Barisano di Trani. Its creamy white limestone and lofty proportions emphasise its stunning location beside the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea.
- Discover Frederick II’s castle: Just a short walk from the cathedral, visit the historic castle built by Emperor Frederick II in 1233. This imposing fortress has a classic quadrangular form, with robust square towers at each corner. It has recently been restored and is now open to the public and hosts frequent concerts, art exhibitions and other cultural events. For history buffs, we’d also recommend taking a day trip to Castel del Monte. A 40-minute drive away, the castle is another of Frederick II's remarkable constructions, known for its unique octagonal design and historical significance.
- Stroll around the fishing port and old centre: The old town centre, a charming mediaeval network of streets with plenty of fine architecture, is arranged around the picturesque fishing port. The harbour-front features numerous bars, cafés and fish restaurants, which are great for an al fresco lunch.
- Relax at the beaches: Spend an afternoon at one of Trani’s nearby beaches, where you can unwind on golden sands and take a dip in the clear Adriatic waters.
