The Area

Cala d'Istria sits on a little beach-flanked promontory on the south coast of Corsica, just over 20km northwest from Bonifacio. This section of the coast is characterised by a series of little coves and bays, many of which have lovely little sandy beaches.

A must-see for anyone staying at Cala d'Istria is Bonifacio, one of Corsica's most dramatically positioned and picturesque towns. Teetering perilously on a high cliff above the sea it offers sublime views over to Sardinia and some good restaurants and bars.

Less than an hour's drive northwest is the panoramically positioned, mediaeval town of Sartène, whose pretty labyrinth of streets gives an idea of Corsican life away from the coastline.

Heading up the east coast one comes to a series of delightful beaches, including those of Santa Giulia, Tamaricciu and Palombaggia, and Porto Vecchio, another of Corsica's many charming towns offering a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants and a nice old town centre looking over the large natural harbour.

Further afield on the west coast is the island's capital, Ajaccio, which is well worth a visit, not least so you can say that you've been to the birthplace of the great Napoleon.

Cala d'Istria is in a fabulous situation, very comfortable, and has everything you need readily available. We would return because we loved the area and want to get to know Corsica better.

Cala d'Istria is a stunning villa with amazing views and sunsets. It was terrific to have the housekeeper in each day to clean and prep breakfast.

Our expectation was to relax, have great experiences. create amazing memories and be immersed in Corsican culture. Cala d'Istria far exceeded any of our expectations. It was so comfortable with all the amenities why would we leave it?

I have rented many luxury villas over the years and all have been wonderful but Cala d'Istria was the most wonderful house of all. Pictures do not do it justice - it is the most thoughtfully constructed house I've ever lived in, designed to take full advantage of the beautiful setting. It was absolutely paradise, unmatched in my extensive travel experience. I do not have enough superlatives in my vocabulary to describe this amazing house. The service was extraordinary. The house manager was a marvel - went so far beyond the call of duty to recommend hikes, reserve beach chairs for us at a beautiful lido, suggest restaurants, and more. She was an endless resource and completely charming in every way. I wanted to bring her home with me! The maid and her team were so lovely in every way - she brought us beautiful things for breakfast every day, and even cooked us the world's most delicious plum tart because she thought we should try it! She kept the house spotless. And the chefs - my god! I have never eaten so well in my life. Master chefs - every dinner was a masterpiece. I could go on and on! The service was magnificent throughout.
