The Area

With seven hectares of private nature reserve at your private disposal, and a further fifteen hundred hectares at your fingertips, you may not want to move very far. Although the beach is accessible on foot, passage is restricted due to the fact that sea turtles use the area as a nesting ground.

The nearest beaches, therefore, are accessed from outside the property, just a few minute's drive and walk, and are rarely crowded (except in the height of summer).

The nearest main town is Noto, the most easterly of a chain of baroque towns now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also perhaps the most perfect of the seven towns, which were all rebuilt in flamboyant style following a major earthquake in 1693. Noto is also where you will find the best supermarkets, grocery stops and amenities. For dining, both Noto and Marzamemi, a very attractive little fishing village, have some excellent restaurants.

If hiking in the hills is your thing, then there is some spectacular scenery in the rushing streams and waterfalls of Cassibile and at the Paleolithic burial sites in the dramatic gorge of Pantalica.

Syracuse is just half an hour's drive away, and at least a day there is highly recommended to anybody spending a week or two at Sighilli. A little further afield, the other baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa and Scicli are also easily reachable for day trips.

From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.

Sighilli far exceeded our high expectations. Everything was top, top notch. The chef was excellent but also a charismatic, wonderful host. And the house manager was always around helping - I honestly don't know when he slept! Just top notch across the board.

Everything was great at Sighilli! The villa was perfect for our group and the staff in particular were outstanding. We are all very happy with the experience.

Sighilli was my favourite Thinking Traveller villa by far. The setting was stunning, overlooking the bird reserve. The villa has multiple outdoor seating areas, which means a large group can enjoy it without being on top of each other. The bedroom suites were enormous, and the beds comfortable. The villa staff were also great.

The staff were AMAZING.

Our holiday at Sighilli was fabulous. It is so peaceful. The villa was spotless, the breakfast wonderful. The dinners prepared by the villa cooks were excellent. Loved the wine delivery service and the fact that the white wine was chilled ready for our arrival.
