The Area

There are few town centres in Italy that are as beautiful, as historic or as intriguing as Ortigia, Syracuse's ancient island heart. Remains of Greek temples rub shoulders with sumptuous baroque palaces, labyrinthine streets offer surprise vistas out to sea and open out into splendid piazzas, restaurants, bars and cafés spill out onto the streets, and a daily market offers up a vast array of irresistible local produce. Following its triumph over Athens in 413 BC Syracuse was arguably the most important city in the Mediterranean (and hence perhaps the world). Remains of that period are beautifully preserved on Ortigia, at Neapolis and in the fabulous archaeological museum, all of which are within a few minutes walk or drive of the apartment. Also within easy distance are white sandy beaches, towns such as Noto, Modica and Ragusa, Mount Etna, and much more.

From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.

Ortigia is a stunning house in a perfect location by the sea. We will remember those drinks on the terrace forever and we would return for the location and the comfort. The Thinking Traveller's team called us to allow an early check in and provided great recommendations for restaurants. They were super helpful and responsive. Thank you!

Ortigia was welcoming, stylish and easy. What stood out was the décor, the cleanliness, the terrace opposite the sea, the amazing view, and the fab services, such as cook and transfers and a person on-hand to ask questions. It was so well-stocked in the kitchen.

The views, bedroom spaces and the terrace at Ortigia were amazing. The location was great.

Charming! Love the floor-to-ceiling shuttered windows/doors with exquisite views of the Mediterranean. Lovely, attractive appointments throughout and a beautifully well-equipped kitchen. Rooftop deck an added, over-the-top bonus!

Ortigia is wonderfully unique, it is in a great location with waterfront ocean views from the second floor and a rooftop patio. Worked great for grandparents on the top floor and a young couple with a baby in the main floor rooms. All staff were very good in their roles.
