The Area

Gioi is set in the gently rolling hills near the fascinating baroque town of Noto and the beautiful natural reserve of Vendicari. Noto is the most easterly of a chain of baroque towns now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also perhaps the most perfect of the baroque towns, which were all rebuilt in flamboyant style following a major earthquake in 1693. The Vendicari nature reserve boasts some of the finest sandy beaches in Sicily, which are pleasingly under populated even in the height of summer. Vendicari is also home to thousands of migrating flamingos, and sea turtles nest on its beaches.

If hiking in the hills is your thing, then there is some spectacular scenery in the rushing streams and waterfalls of Cassibile and at the Paleolithic burial sites in the dramatic valley of Pantalica.

Syracuse is just half an hour's drive away, and a day there is highly recommended to anybody spending a week or two at Gioi. A little further afield, the other baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa, Modica and Scicli are easily reachable in a day.

Nero D’Avola, Cerasuolo di Vittoria, Frappato, Syrah and Moscato Bianco are just a few of the grape varieties cultivated in the Noto area, and we heartily recommend a vineyard visit during your stay. We know the right people and the most prestigious wineries in the area, and we’d be delighted to arrange a chauffeured wine tasting tour with lunch for you.

From here until the southeasternmost tip of Sicily, the coastline is an uninterrupted stretch of sandy beach, dotted with picturesque little resort towns, including Punta Secca (Inspector Montalbano's home), Marina di Ragusa, Donnalucata, Cava d'Aliga, Sampieri and Marina di Modica. The last strip, made up of several miles of dunes, is where the Allied forces landed in the 2nd World War. At the southernmost tip of Sicily is Isola Delle Correnti, offering an almost African scenario. Indeed, here we are considerably further south than Tunis.Just around the southeastern tip and heading north up the east coast, are the beaches of Marzamemi, San Lorenzo and Vendicari Nature Reserve. The reserve's salt water lagoons and varieties of flora offer the ideal habitat for a wide range of fauna, including nesting turtles and migrating flamingos.Continuing up the east coast, between Vendicari and the historic Greek town of Syracuse, are the popular sandy beaches of Marina di Noto, Calabernado, Marina di Avola, Gelsomineto, Fontane Bianche and Arenella.

What I loved about Gioi was that it had charm, authenticity, and luxury intertwined. The location is private yet a short driving distance to a lot of different areas. It was a nice peaceful retreat after spending a day in town. The villa was lovely and having caretakers on site was exceptionally helpful. Although we did not see them much, at every question or request, they were there and so caring. We used the pool almost daily and made fresh lemonade from the orchard to cool us off after a hot day of exploring.

We had a fantastic time at Gioi. The property was very well-maintained and the staff were great. I was a very pleasant experience overall. The city of Noto was wonderful - a lot of great restaurants and cafés.

We had a wonderful time. We spent most of our time sunbathing, swimming, cooking, eating and drinking. With lovely sunbeds, a great pool, fantastic kitchen appliances and lots of nice spots to eat and drink, we really couldn’t have asked for more.

First stay in Sicily, loved it. Perfect villa layout for our needs and the natural shade provided by the stunning olive trees outside provided wonderful shade.

Lucky, Shama and Fabrizio were all amazing. Lucky and Shama ensured they were there at any moment we needed and were helpful and welcoming. They are wonderful people we would return just for them. Our children loved them.
