Catania's existence is inextricably linked to the whims of its unforgiving neighbour, Mount Etna. Destroyed on several occasions by “a Muntagna”, as the locals refer to it, much of the impressive Baroque centre was rebuilt out of lava stone and rests on lava foundations. Now a busy city, Catania is home to some delightful aristocratic palazzi, opulent churches, a buzzing fish market and the impressive remains of a Roman theatre.
