Alonissos Old Town Travel Guide
Towns and cities in Alonissos
Alonissos Old Town, or Chora, provides sweeping vistas of the Aegean Sea, the island’s lush greenery, and neighbouring Skopelos. After being abandoned following a devastating earthquake in 1965, the town was revitalised in the 1980s by tourists who fell in love with its picturesque potential. Today, Alonissos Old Town is a vibrant, multicultural community filled with beautifully restored homes and colourful streets.
About the town
Sitting atop its very own hill at 200 meters above sea level, Alonissos Old Town offers a serene getaway with a delightful blend of history and culture. Narrow alleyways, age-worn steps, and maze-like paths wind around the hillside, leading to vibrant balconies overflowing with greenery and flowers. Colourfully painted doors and shutters add charm to the town, while cafés, artisanal shops, and tavernas spill out onto the streets. The town's heritage is evident in its Byzantine churches and Venetian walls, and it is also closely situated to beautiful beaches down the coast.
Things to do in Alonissos Old Town
- Explore the historic town: Wander through the maze of streets around the Old Town, discovering the historic architecture and Byzantine churches that give the town its unique character.
- Hike from Patitiri: A footpath from the port of Patitiri, just two kilometres away to the east, provides the best and most scenic way of arriving at old Alonissos Town. Head there in the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset aperitif and stay on for a moonlit dinner. Then you’ll really understand why this once abandoned, tumble-down town was brought back to life with so much love.
- Relax at nearby beaches: Spend a day at the splendid beaches just a couple of kilometres away, a proximity that makes it eminently possible to nip down for a quick dip whenever the sea calls.
- Visit Alonissos Marine Park: Explore the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades, home to diverse marine life and beautiful landscapes. It’s also the largest marine reserve in the Mediterranean.
- Take a trip to neighbouring islands: Take a boat trip to nearby islands like Skopelos or Skiathos, and explore their stunning natural beauty. It’s relatively easy to travel between the islands. A regular service of hydrofoils and car ferries run between Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos (from Patitiri).
