The Thinking Traveller Launches ‘The Thoughtful Traveller Day’
In 2021, the tourism industry lost 1.78 trillion Euros due to the pandemic. All over the world, many jobs were lost and businesses closed forever. All in all, the effect was felt globally, and countries with economies that depend on tourism were impacted the most.
Now that the tourism industry has opened back up, these countries and their local businesses need your support more than ever and one small way you can do that is to leave a review. We at The Thinking Traveller are passionate about supporting small local businesses that are integral to making sure our customers' experiences are unforgettable.
That’s why we are launching ‘The Thoughtful Traveller Day’ on the 12 August to encourage people to think back to the amazing small restaurants, cafés, shops, markets and everything in between and leave them a review, because they need our support more than ever.
To highlight the importance of these reviews, we decided to commission a survey to find out how likely the UK is to leave a review for a small business abroad, discover the cities that are the most supportive and reveal how reviews influence where you spend your money while on holiday. For example, two in five UK adults would not commit to visiting a foreign restaurant or tourist attraction without reading an online review first.
Top 10 UK cities to leave reviews
Residents of the Welsh capital are the most likely to leave reviews for small businesses with 52% claiming to have left a review for one whilst being on holiday, with London and Liverpool not far behind. In terms of age groups, 25-34 year olds were the most likely to give online feedback.
UK cities least likely to leave reviews
Newcastle is the least likely to leave a review for small businesses while also the least likely to recommend a restaurant or other small businesses to a friend or family after being abroad.
45% of the UK said they were unsure whether they would leave a positive review for businesses abroad, despite knowing they would need the support after the pandemic. A quarter of holidaymakers stated that they couldn’t be bothered to leave a positive review despite having a positive experience and almost a third admitted nothing was stopping them from writing a positive review despite having a positive experience.
UK cities to most likely leave good reviews
Brighton came out on top as the city with residents most likely to leave a good review after visiting a small business abroad. In terms of age groups, holidaymakers that were 55+ were the most generous with their reviews, mainly giving positive feedback for other people to read.
UK cities to most likely leave bad reviews
Alternatively, Plymouth came out on top for being the toughest critics, with 79% of residents from the city claiming they are most likely to leave a bad review. Despite 25-34 year olds being the most likely to give feedback, they are not shy of letting a business know when they have had a bad experience with 71% of them most likely to leave a negative review.
UK cities that are most influenced by reviews
London residents are the most likely to visit a business or cancel plans to visit one after reading online reviews. Our survey also found that over a third of tourists from the UK need to read between 4 and 10 positive reviews before they are willing to visit a small business abroad.
With over a third of tourists from the UK visiting a small business while on their holidays because of a review they read, you can see the influence of them and in turn why it’s important to leave reviews for these restaurants, cafés, shops and markets that make a holiday special. That’s why The Thinking Traveller has launched this awareness day to not only support local business in the regions where we offer our luxury villas, but urge every holidaymaker to think about a time when you found a business that made your holiday memorable and leave a review.
How to get involved in supporting small Businesses abroad
Leaving a review for a small business abroad can mean the difference between them winning or losing a customer – so on the 12 August, we urge you to think back to the businesses you loved while you were on holiday but haven’t yet reviewed. Whether it was a café, a little local restaurant or a market, if you can find them on any review site then please leave a positive review and inspire other travellers to shop, eat or visit there.
Don’t forget to show your support for this awareness day by using the hashtag #TheThoughtfulTraveller in your review!
The Thoughtful Traveller Facebook Group
To mark the launch of the very first The Thoughtful Traveller Day, we are also launching a secret Facebook group for our clients. Access to this group will allow users to get exclusive access to benefits that other clients wouldn’t normally, such as first access to new villas, last minute availability offers and more. We will only be accepting 100 members every year and the only way you can get access is to prove that you have left a review for a small business abroad by telling us the platform and business you helped to support. You can submit your application to join the group here.
